Zeer uitgebreide (video) review XEEN versus ZEISS en Sony.

Newsshooter vergelijkt de nieuwe XEEN objectieven met de ZEISS CP.2 en Sony Cinealta primes. Hierbij gebruiken ze vergelijkende video's. Enkele conclusies:

"In the test the XEEN lens appeared to be warmer than the Sony or Zeiss. In 4K the XEEN also appeared to be the sharpest of the three."

"The XEEN lenses are certainly an interesting proposition for budget-limited shooters who might otherwise be looking at buying high-end Canon or Zeiss stills lenses."

“Upon receiving a preproduction set of the new Xeen Cine lenses, we decided to put them through the test – the test of what these lenses are really made for : shooting cinematic footage. Though the price tag on these lenses is small to a degree that was previously unthinkable, their performance is most definitely not. Right of the bat, it is obvious these are finely crafted workhorses, with a solid construction and a smooth operation of focus and iris with just the right amount of resistance to give feedback and confidence to the operator. Their size is also what one would expect from a cinema lens, but surprisingly, their weight is kept to a minimum. This is a huge advantage in my opinion as the weight of cameras goes down as well and the use of lightweight jibs and 3 axis gimbals goes up day by day.

It goes without saying that the performance needs to be up to snuff to compete in a world filled with competitors that are considerably higher priced. Image quality is very high indeed, a nicely rendered image with very high definition – the camera will most likely be the limiting factor as far as definition goes when combined with these lenses. Chromatic abberations are kept nicely at bay – it is all rather good… I was also pleasantly surprised to see that the level of blooming is nicely controlled, outperforming quite some (considerably higher priced) lenses I’ve used over the years. Note that the Xeen lenses are all T1.5, making it an even more impressive feat. There is some breathing, but no unexpected amount. Especially considering the MOD is rather short, focusing all the way down to 25cm on the 24mm T1.5 lens. The 11-blade iris does what it is expected to do : limiting the difference in appearance of the bokeh between wide open and closed down. 11 blades seems to be a sweet spot, to keep the shape of the bokeh as smooth as possible. It might not be as smooth as an 18 blade iris, but it is a gigantic improvement over 6 or 9 blades. Especially at this price point, it is a blessing.

In conclusion,
all we can say is that we were highly impressed with the performance, construction quality and overall feel of the lenses. At a price point previously deemed impossible for cinema lenses. The price tag might be rock buttom, the performance most definitely is not in our experience…”

Fotograaf Dustin Abbott gaat zeer uitgebreid in op de mogelijkheden en kwaliteiten van de Samyang 135mm F/2.0. Hij laat ook talloze testfoto's zien en steekt zijn lof niet onder stoelen of banken:
"if you are in the market for a 135mm f/2 lens and want both better optics and a cheaper price, this lens is worth a very long look. It has the ability to produce images that are amongst the finest possible with this focal length. And that is always intriguing!"

De gerenommeerde fotowebsite Photozone heeft de nieuwe Samyang 135mm T2.2 grondig aan de tand gevoeld. Dit objectief is de video uitvoering van de Samyang 135mm F2.0.

Ze zijn zeer lovend over het objectief:
" The image quality is almost stunning with very good results at T2.2 and an excellent if not outstanding quality at medium aperture settings and across the image frame. A very low amount of lateral CAs also helps to increase the sharpness perception."

Review van de Full-Frame Samyang 12mm F2.8 ED AS NCS Fisheye

Dit is het Fisheye objectief waar veel fotografen op zaten te wachten. De Samyang 8mm Fisheye is namelijk alleen beschikbaar voor camera's met en APS-C formaat sensor. De nieuwe Samyang 12mm F2.8 ED AS NCS Fisheye is speciaal ontworpen voor Full-Frame camera's en heeft door zijn bijzondere optische constructie een uitzonderlijke beeldhoek. Door toepassing van het zogenaamd "Stereographic mapping" principe geeft het niet alleen diagonaal 180 graden beeld, maar is ook het horizontale en verticale beeld veel groter dan bij een standaard Fisheye objectief. Zelfs op een APS-C camera me teen crop factor van 1,5x geeft het nog een beeldhoek van 125 graden.
Nikon Rumors testte de nieuwe Samyang 12mm op de eveneens nieuwe Nikon D750 en waren meer dan lovend over de resultaten.

"The Samyang (WalimexPro/Rokinon etc.) 12 mm f2.8 fish-eye is a well-built lens at an affordable price. The lens produces sharp images and has an insanely wide field of view. The fun factor is outstandingly high."
